WELCOA Releases Self-Care Book

OMAHA (NE)--The Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA) has recently released their new self-care book entitled Self-Care Essentials. The self-care book was designed as a simple guide to help workplaces engage their employees in effectively managing their healthcare and living well.

Developed and reviewed by medical and health professionals, the full-color 128 page illustrated publication provides a wealth of self-care information useful in helping organizations contain their health care costs and reduce unnecessary healthcare utilization.

At the current pace, health care costs are expected to double by the year 2007, according to The Kiplinger Washington Letter. Approximately 70 % of all doctor visits are unnecessary, and over a third of all minor medical conditions can be treated without a trip to the doctor at all. Self-Care Essentials provides people with step-by-step guidelines for
treating all kinds of health conditions in their own homes, thus reducing unnecessary visits to the doctor.

The self-care book is complete with four chapters. The first chapter, Emergency Care, outlines what is, and what isn't considered an emergency situation. It offers critical information about treatment strategies, explaining when it is necessary to seek the help of professional emergency personnel. The next chapter, Our Most Common Conditions, addresses 28 of the most common medical conditions, providing legitimate solutions that can be implemented at home without professional medical care. Chapter three, titled How to Manage Chronic Conditions, explores chronic conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and migraines, offering preventive strategies for better living. Finally, Taking Medications Appropriately provides valuable information and practical tips for getting the most out of medications. Also included in Self-Care Essentials is a comprehensive glossary containing over 100 medical and health terms, allowing readers to gain an understanding of the terminology surrounding self-care.

Self-Care Essentials is unique in design with its engaging and "friendly format," as it cuts to the chase with its information. "WELCOA's health information makes learning fun and easy. It's colorful, entertaining and, most importantly, it contains outstanding health information," says Dr. Joe Leutzinger, Director of Health Promotion Union Pacific Railroad.

WELCOA's primary objective behind the publication of Self-Care Essentials is to help organizations avoid significant increases of their health care costs through self-initiatives, allowing businesses and employees to move forward together. The book comes complete with online information on how to implement a self-care initiative into the workplace.
