When it comes to designing and implementing a worksite wellness program, there are two paths that can be followed—activity-centered or results-oriented.

Activity-Centered Approaches

Activity-centered workplace wellness programs are those that make "activities" the central focus of their initiative. By using a publication like 101 Ways to Wellness or drawing on the list of programs that appear in the National Calendar of Health Observances, many workplace wellness practitioners incorporate a variety of simple activities into their company's annual schedule of wellness events. For example, February might include "heart smart" activities because it is American Heart Month. Similarly, October's program might address recognizing the signs and symptoms of cancer since it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

There's a Better Way

If you are currently running an activity-centered workplace wellness program, there's no reason to feel bad—a lot of people start this way. Indeed, according to a variety of recent national surveys, it is widely understood that the vast majority of workplace wellness programs in the U.S. are activity-centered. However, at the Wellness Council of America, we believe that there is a better and more effective way to build workplace wellness programs.

Results-Oriented Approaches

In contrast to activity-centered approaches, results-oriented initiatives are those programs that are carefully researched, thoughtfully designed, and flawlessly executed. They are focused not on simply offering a "program of the month," but on impacting the organization's bottom line through improved employee health and increased productivity. Although it can be challenging, making the switch from activity-centered to results-oriented programming can be accomplished with a little guidance and direction. WELCOA's "Seven C's" approach offers that direction, and transforms wellness programs into initiatives that attain measurable results.

As the one of the nation's premier resources for workplace wellness, WELCOA is committed to helping you and your organization make the move from an activity-centered approach to a more results-oriented one.
