Navigating the Complex Waters of Human Behavior Change
PRESENTED BY: Dr. Rosie Ward, Ph.D., MPH, MCHES, BCC • CEO & Co-Founder, Salveo Partners
Let’s face it; change is hard. Even with a supportive workplace culture and climate, individuals and organizations do not change easily. This is because, unlike machines, people are complex and are not predictable or controllable. Consequently, the use of incentives doesn’t work for promoting sustainable change. In fact, hundreds and hundreds of research studies conclude that the carrot and stick approach may result in compliance, but it doesn’t equate to commitment and actually erodes engagement and intrinsic motivation. The reality is that there is no shortcut to meaningful change.
Our behaviors are a manifestation of our thinking our mindset and inner narrative. As human beings, our brains are hard-wired to seek out familiarity and comfort. Therefore, effectively leading and supporting change requires equipping people to embrace the discomfort so they can wade in the messy middle of change, be more self-aware and shift their thinking. This means we need to create the conditions to support people in having autonomy, mastery and purpose… and then let them be the authors of their own journey. This course will explore the latest research on change, cognitive development, incentives and what it actually takes to effectively navigate the waters of human behavior change. You will learn why and how to shift from focusing on behaviors and incentives to fostering greater self-awareness, better thinking and meaningful, lasting change.
Learning Objectives
Distinguish the critical differences between technical and adaptive challenges
Describe key characteristics of adaptive challenges and considerations for effectively supporting people’s ability to navigate adaptive change
Define the Evolution of Motivation
Identify the pitfalls of Motivation 2.0 and why moving beyond incentives is essential for thriving wellbeing
Identify the stages of adult development and mental complexity and the importance of upgrading our ability to handle greater complexity
Describe how our mindset influences our ability to adapt to change and the importance of moving to Motivation 4.0
Identify ways to correct for incentives and support better thinking
