How COVID-19 Is Impacting the Workplace

BY: Ryan Picarella, MS // President • WELCOA

Dear WELCOA Nation,

We are in the midst of unprecedented times, and I want you to know you have a trusted partner to help navigate this uncharted territory. WELCOA has been supporting organizations for over 30 years and we are prepared to help our nation’s employers manage this situation and ensure all employees are taken care of.

Like many of you, I have had my moments of anxiety and apprehension. Having young daughters and older relatives is top of mind, as is all the people whose lives, jobs and normal routines have been impacted. Financial wellness is also top of mind as we have witnessed some of the market’s largest drops in recent history. You are not alone, and I believe in times of crisis, opportunity can emerge. As health promotion professionals, you are being looked to for answers – and you may not have them. WELCOA is here to help.

To better support our WELCOA Members, we have committed to establishing a dedicated page on our website. to house information and resources related to COVID-19. Beginning this week, we will have weekly recorded webinars and employer toolkits that will be available to all. We also provide an open Q&A where you can submit any challenges you’re facing and resources you’d like to see.

During this time of uncertainty, I’d like to ask each of you to consider a few things:

  • Flexibility – given we are in unprecedented times we are all going to have to operate with a little more uncertainly and flexibility as each passing day presents new challenges and unforeseen circumstances. This may be difficult for many that are used to routine, but we all may need a little more grace and flexibility given the unknowns that lie ahead.
  • Through crisis comes great opportunity. Our members, our families, friends, loved ones and the world are looking for strong leadership. We have a responsibility to do what we can to be a shining light for others. Let’s stand in the gap for all who need support. Find ways to support your employees in ways you may not have tried before. Be an example.
  • Please take care of yourself and your families. No good can happen if we aren’t well ourselves. Please practice self-care, continue your healthy practices, get some sleep, and eat well. The basics matter.
  • Connect with friends and family who may need a little encouragement. This can be a time full of anxiety and confusion. Pick a few people a day to connect with virtually and let them know they are cared for and heard. You may not have the answers, but oftentimes it’s not answers we seek, just an ear to listen.

We are in this together and we will get through this together.

Love,
-Ryan
