Healthy Halloween. Do those words scare you? Ask any kid about Halloween and the majority will bring up candy; it’s a Halloween staple. So are there really ways you can make Halloween healthier without raining on the parade of every kiddo and kid-at-heart out there? We think so!
- Halloween meal: start a tradition of creating a fun Halloween-themed (healthy) meal before heading out to trick-or-treat! This will help everybody have full bellies and not be as tempted to over-indulge in treats as they get them. It will also create a fun family-bonding experience! Get creative with it—make spooky faces on sandwiches or wraps, spaghetti and eyeballs, or ghostly bananas! Check out more fun examples at Forks over Knives.
- Stay active: whether you are going door-to-door or staying home and passing out candy, incorporate some physical activity fun into it! Set a family step count goal and see how far you walk. Turn on some music while handing out candy and have a dance party with your spooky little visitors. Whatever you are doing, just keep moving!
- Consider handing out candy alternatives: there are some ways that you can hand out healthier alternatives and not be ‘that house’ that gives out floss. Some other options to consider are granola bars, pretzels, pumpkin seeds, honey sticks or go the non-food route with glow sticks, stickers, pencils, bubbles, or mini-puzzles. Non-food options are a great way to make Halloween healthier, safer and more inclusive for all! Check out the Teal Pumpkin Project for some great ideas and free resources.
